 Carlos Francisco Brazão Vieira Alho

Carlos is a Brazilian forester. He obtained his BSc in Forestry in 2010 from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and his MSc in Environmental and Forestry Sciences with emphasis in Technology and Utilization of Forest Products in 2012 from the same university. He has been working with soil organic matter (SOM) since 2007 in cooperation with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) focusing on the characterization of SOM fractions by spectroscopic techniques. In 2008 he started working with biochar and for his BSc. thesis, he studied the effects of biochar application on soil nitrous oxide emissions. During his MSc. he studied the effects of pyrolysis final temperature on biochar stability and this work was performed in cooperation with Embrapa  and the United Kingdom Biochar Research Centre (UKBRC) of University of Edinburgh.

 

Short description of PhD thesis (research topic #7).

Research efforts in order to elucidate mechanisms regarding SOM stabilization is essential for achieving a sustainable use of soils, upon which a growing and changing habits world population in a changing climate scenario will depend on. In this sense, recently studies have been carried out to better understand the mechanisms of SOM stabilization and high cation exchange capacity (CEC) found in anthropic soils that occur in the Amazon basin locally called Terra Preta de Índio (TP). These soils are rich in black carbon (BC) and nutrients such as calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) and their interactions regarding SOM stabilization has been claimed to be a key factor for soil sustainable use. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate the role of BC in organo-mineral interactions in order to elucidate to what extent BC, Ca an P are important for SOM stabilization in TP soils.
